Apr 02, 2016 I completely agree with you that melodyne shines in ways that auto tune doesn't, as here mentioned, and yet, i find myself almost never using it. Not sure why honestly, all i'm saying is if i had to make a hard choice and pick only one tool, it would be auto tune. Melodyne is a hell of a great tool when you need it, i just find i don't need it much. Welcome
“As you probably are already aware Antares Auto-Tune is not the only option for tuning vocals and other instruments. Many third-party software packages are available for almost any DAW and some like Apple's Logic include their own built-in pitch correction software. While many engineers will defend their favorite pitch correction solution to no end, I personally find that understanding and using as many as possible gives me the most opportunities to get the job done right. Now the two major competitors in this field are of course Auto-Tune and Celemony's Melodyne. Let's take a few minutes to break down some of the similarities and differences between the two pitch correction packagers. So, both programs allow for the graphical editing and correction of pitch. This is Auto-Tune, this is Melodyne. Both represent pitch graphically. You can grab objects and write in that pitch. Now, both programs also offer quick ways or automated ways for correcting of vocal to a specific scale and key…Practice while you learn with exercise files

Whilst the results are of some interest the most interesting one is how few preferred the original performance. The performance was chosen because of the note drift on some notes and whilst not perfect it was not in the realm of bad singing by any stretch.
This seems to indicate that despite all the negative rhetoric often seen written in forums and on social media about tuning software it seems 9 in 10 preferred a tuned vocal in this case.

Have we become normalised to pitch perfect vocals? Is it possible to put out a track these days without using tuning software? If it's so much part of the modern production process why are so many artists so adamant about admitting to using it in the studio?
